Bytown Museum

The headline reads "Bytown Museum, true tales of Courage, Passion and Scandal!" Well, that says a lot. This museum is in one of the oldest buildings in Ottawa at the foot of the Chateau Laurier and Parliament Hill. Open April through November, this fine museum is accessible to all on the first floor, but there are steep stairs to the upper floors. (613) 234-4570. Walk down the stairs from Wellington Street on the Parliament side of the locks. At the time of my visit the way down from the Chateau Laurier was closed for construction. Very nice guides who know their history will answer your questions about early Ottawa history. www.bytownmuseum.com

I was there at the same time as a large number of young students, but they were well behaved. The building is so tidy it is hard to believe that it is so old and has withstood so many winters. The exhibits are easy to understand and of course there are videos for the younger folks who prefer such things to real artifacts. A small fee for a ticket, but well worth it. There is 'disabled' parking at the rear of the building, but I have no idea how to get there in a car. Telephone ahead for details. A small picnic area is a good place to enjoy the food, ice cream and treats they have for sale which help to support this wonderful museum. Interesting to all above the age of very small children.
