Description: Glasgow has some of the best shopping in the UK and in my opinion it is the best city for shopping outside of London. The reason I think this is because of the sheer choice on offer in the city. There are all the usual high street brands you would expect alongside all the upmarket international names and lots of interesting little boutiques and independent retailers.
With the weather in Scotland being like it is one of the joys of shopping in Glasgow is that a lot of the city centre shopping is in covered malls.
The Buchanan Galleries is a large indoor shopping mall in the city centre where you can pretty much be guaranteed to find something to take your fancy.
There are over 90 shops in the Galleries with some shops being the only ones in the whole of Scotland.
Fashion brands take main precedence in the Buchanan Galleries with the majority of the shops selling clothes. Shops range from American brands such as Levi Straus and Hollister to big European brands such as H&M. The UK fashion shops are well catered for too with a Topman and River Island.
There are of course other types of shops here and they even include a supermarket so you could easily spend the whole day here shopping without ever having to step foot outside in the cold and rain.
There are loads of jewellers and even a hair salon and being Scotland there is of course a shop selling Whiskey. I managed to spend a small fortune visiting and found pretty much everything I wanted and a few other things that I hadn’t even though of before visiting.
The Galleries are housed in a large building at the top of Buchanan Street in the city centre right next to Sauchiehall Street and there are a few entrances dotted about.
Outside there is a subway station, bus station and even a train station and the walk from the central train station is only about 10 minutes so it is easy to reach even if you are only visiting the city for the day. The Galleries also have their own underground car park which is open until 11:30pm every night.
Inside the Galleries are really light and modern and very clean. The shops are arranged over 4 floors and there are several maps to show you where everything is located though the majority of the shops are on the ground and first floor. Escalators are located in several areas for easy access between the floors and there are lifts too for disabled visitors and those with prams and pushchairs.
Of course if you are going to be in the Galleries for a long time then you are going to need a rest occasionally and this is one area where I thought the Galleries could improve. I felt that they could have done with more seating areas for people because although I noticed some they were usually occupied as the Galleries can become extremely busy.
There are several places where you can stop and have something to eat or drink though including chains such as Costa Coffee and Burger King.
I would recommend visiting the Buchanan Galleries for a day’s shopping. There is a huge selection of shops to choose from. People who are looking for something more distinctive will perhaps want to try somewhere else but for people looking for high street shops in a warm and dry environment then they can’t really fail to find something to take their fancy here.
Opening hours for the Buchanan Galleries are 9:00am to 6:00pm every day with the exception of Sundays when the Galleries open at 10:00am instead.
