Description: Brimstone Hill Fortress is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is a well-preserved fort with many remaining buildings and walls. This is quite a feat since there were several battles over the island of St. Kitts in the 17th and 18th century - back in the days of cannons. There is a small but very nice museum display at the top of the hill in Fort George Citadel.
You can get Brimstone Hill by car or taxi (your taxi driver will wait for you). If you drive, be careful as the road is narrow and winding. Near the top you stop to pay and can get an audio tour which we all found to be worth the extra money. The entrance fee for non-residents is EC $20 - or $8 U.S. You then continue up to the parking area.
You can do a lot of walking to inspect all the stone buildings that remain from 1852 when the fort was abandoned. Near the parking lot there are a couple of restored buildings that house the visitors centre and canteen. There are several bathrooms located at the Fortress. If it is hot, remember your sunscreen as there is not much shade. We ate a great lunch of BBQ chicken and garlic bread.
