There's something highly significant about JUST BEING HERE! To have "walked the walk" of SO many, who come from ALL places, for a multitude of reasons, just to be in Washington, D.C., . . . is HUGE!
I know I "panned" some major sites for "content of tour," but believe it, this is STILL worth making the trip to stand on the steps of the Capitol or Supreme Court Building (you don't have to go inside . . . ), AND to walk Pennsylvania Avenue to stand before the gates of the White House!
It was meaningful to me to stand on the steps of Grant's Monument, and to remember that Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., stood there, too . . . encouraging and inspiring us all!
It was meaningful to me to wander Lafayette Square and to meet/get info from the woman denouncing nuclear warfare (seems she's been a pretty permanent fixture/institution(?!) since the early '80s--now THAT'S conviction!).
It was meaningful to me to see the MIA/POW stand STILL VERY MUCH IN EXISTENCE across from the Lincoln Memorial (who, besides me, remembers the silver bracelets we wore for the Vietnam MIA's?)
It was meaningful to me to see the items left at the foot of walls of the Vietnam Memorial, and to see entire families make the trek to "rub a name."
It was meaningful to me to see the homeless on the very grounds that their fate is determined.
It was meaningful to me to see the many different demonstrations, with ONE COMMON THEME, "We do NOT agree"!
If the United States has a "mecca," I believe Washington, D.C., IS IT--I've witnessed it in motion, and in varying degrees and in many colors.
NOT TO BE MISSED . . . on your OWN personal journey, OR in the respectful honor of OTHERS'.
