Sure Virginia Beach is nice but Sandbridge is where it's at! Sandbridge Beach is about a 15-20 minute drive away from the strip but it's worth it. There's not a lot of parking but if you go during the week in the middle of the day it won't be a problem and it's free. There's even a restaurant right next to the lot if you choose, or a market where you can get some supplies for your cooler.

This beach is uncrowded and if you wait long enough you'll see a dolphin or two.

It is very nice and quiet, since not a lot of people know about this place--only the locals do. You can collect a lot of very pretty seashells from this beach or play sand volleyball.

If you want to go to the beach that is not crowded like I often do, you would want to go to Sandbridge. You will not find a lot of the amenities that are available at other places such as jet skis and volleyball, but you will be able to enjoy surf in the sun in solitude. If you walk far enough down the beach you can actually see remnants of shipwrecks. Get a good book, sunscreen, and a beach umbrella to enjoy a nice morning by the Atlantic Ocean.
