Broadbeach Waters, Australia
August 27, 2005
The site although fairly small is actually much more interesting than what I expected. You pass by the ceremonial bathing pools that are nearly empty to reach the entrance of the cave. It is guarded by what appears to be a mythical creature rather than an elephant. You then enter through the gaping mouth passing by what appear to be a huge set of fingers on the left hand side.
Inside the cave there are more statues of what appear to be mythical beasts that are sustained by the many offerings made at their feet. These are offerings as in typical Balinese offerings such as flowers, biscuits etc and not child sacrifices or anything quite so sinister.
Located a short drive from Ubud entry is around 5000 Rupiah including the use of a sarong if you are wearing shorts or a skirt.
Once you have wandered through the main area surrounding the cave make sure you walk down the steps towards the river. It is really lush and peaceful, with a small waterfall and ponds; it is an oasis tucked away from the main crowds.
