memories of a desert hike

Hiking in the desert: an experience not to be missed! It's enough to head outside Tozeur a few miles or kilometres, and you're right in the desert. Now before you head out you'll need to take some precautions: bring a bottle of water or two - don't forget your compass to find your way back - and yes, do take off your contacts. Done that? 3, 2, 1, GO!

My friends and I took only a short hike, maybe 3 hours - it was also winter so we did not take too much water - dehydration wasn't surely a problem considering it was really cold and windy. So anyway here's how it went..

we started off in a more or less straight line - we just enjoy walking on the sand and found it less soft than we had imagined... our feet did not sink - it was fairly compact. When this novelty had work off we started selecting where to go according to the height of the dunes: we were always looking for a larger one "to conquer" - and there was always a larger one to reach. At some point we realized the search would be never-ending - so we started to select the next dune according to its shape: we wanted to slide downhill (downdune?) as if we were sking. At the end of the day we were looking for the one with the softest sand, to just ie down and roll on it.

Generally speaking - more than a hike it felt like going back to childhood and playing with the sand - only this time our playground was huge - and from the place we were it even looked infinite: we could see no road - there were no other people - everything was perfectly still and silent. In 3 words "everything was perfect". It's an experience i'm longing to do soon again.
