We suggested it to our guide. It was not on the initial itinerary, but we had heard that it was amazing. The drive is about 2 hours and absolutely breathtaking. Stay alert as you wind up the mountain, and watch yourself meet the clouds.
Ganden is about 16,000 feet up, so do this later in your trip, after you have acclimated! You may want to buy some oxygen in Lhasa and pack a lunch.
You can eat in a little restaurant, but don’t expect anything close to Western standards and expect a lot of (friendly) stares. Or you can eat outside looking at the surreal views.
Of course, tour the historic monastery – greet monks and make donations to your favorite Buddha. At the end of your day, hike to the peak- this may be very difficult considering the altitude. In the tradition of the locals, don’t forget to circumambulate the monastery. It will take 2 hours. Take your time, look around – you are at the roof of the world.
