Castelmola is perched just above Taormina on a very steep mountain. It is named for the remains of the ancient Saracen castle which is the centerpiece of the town. The hike up is very steep and hard, but showcases some of the most spectacular views ever, including a small waterfall and a mountainside church. The castle remains are scant, but provide an amazing lookout over the Sicilian coast. In addition, there is a restaurant which was created using portions of the old castle. You'll find many little shops with better prices than in Taormina below. For those of you who don't want to make the hike, you can take a bus or a taxi up to the top from Taormina.
