The Spine Trail is a great family bicycle trail. It's relatively flat, and has a paved surface. There are a few miles of on street biking, but it's easy to go in the right direction. The trail starts in Milford, just 2 miles south of the Arnolds Park Amusement Park. It runs 12 miles up to Spirit Lake north of route 9 through Spirit Lake, Iowa.
