It just happend that I visited Sofia during Easter. Easter in orthodox church is celebrated a few weeks after catholic/protestant celebrations - different calendar, Jullian one.

85 % of Bulgarian are Orthodox. After may years of communism, religous life has come back.

Celebrations of Easter in Orthodox churches are more mystical than in ours. In St. Nicolas church for examples you can listen to the beautiful choir, smell incense. Atmosphere, darknes of the church, music, choir singing was making a religous experience very special.

Cathedral of Alexandre Nevsky (Good Saturday) -very strange custom - long queue of people in the church, and in front of it. Everybody young or old was waiting to crawl under the table, coverd by green leaves of weeds, to kiss the foot Jesus presented on crucifix. After this, orthodox deacon was giving green weed to the faithful.

Midnight Saturday/ Sunday)- crowd was waiting in front of Alexander nevsky Church- lit very beautifully - everybody was holding the candle. Patriarch of Bulgarian Orthodox Church left bulding of sobor, dressed in beautiful, golden garments, holding crucifix and icons. Crowd repeted after him "Christos voskres" (Jesus Christ rise from the death).

Easter in Sophia is an unforgettable experience - believe me

From journal Sofia- just a weekend!
