Shell Collecting

You can find many different types of shells on the island. It's nice and relaxing wandering up and down the beaches, looking for shells. We found many shells on the west side of the island and near the lighthouse.

Best beach for collecting shells.

Check the magazines for low tide information and be sure not to take any live shells. Also be sure to wash the shells with bleach to get rid of any fishy smell and any little crabs that might be in the shells.

I was able to find many sizes and types of shells including sand dollars. Great craft project material. I have made Angels from the shells and other ornaments as well as decorating glass bowls. Shops in town have supplies needed to make many crafts as well as decorative bowls to display your shells. Be sure to wear rubber water shoes as shells are rough on your feet.

One of the things Sanibel is known for is shelling. On all the beaches, you can find many different types of shells, often in great condition. You have to get up early to beat the crowds to the best picks, but you can find some shells at any time of day.
