From Popes to Paupers

This tour explores the Vatican City and working-class district of Trastevere. Picnic in the Botanic Gardens or dine on delicious authentic food at La Frashett, on Via di San Francesco a Ripa 134 in Trastevere.

* Follow Via Guila (1) to the river and around to Ponte Sant’ Angelo (2). Pope Gregory led a procession across this bridge in the 6th century, praying for the city’s deliverance from the plague. Head past the Castel Sant’ Angelo to St. Peters (3).
* There are many routes through the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel (4) – take the longest one and ignore the bits you’re not interested in, then enjoy a break in the nearby Botanical Gardens (5).
* Via del Scala cuts through the working-class district of Rome to Santa Maria in Trastevere (6) then Via della Lungaretta leads to the river, the Ponte Cestio, built in 46 BC, and Tiber Island (7).
