Raja Kelkar Museum, situated on Bajirao Road, is a must-see for tourists. It has collection items and artifacts from all over the country. They were collected by Shri Dinkar Ganghadhar Kelkar over a period of 70 years. Some of the exhibit items date back to the Mughal and the Maratha periods. The most enchanting attraction is the Mastani Mahal, brought from the original settings and re-erected here. You can see a wonderful collection of foot scrubs used by the queens, hair ornaments, musical instruments, and lots more. Check it out!

A peep into history and one man's passion as he collected hundreds of everyday objects from all parts of the country and put them up for us to observe a passage of time as to how various objects from the mundane lock (hundred varieties) to the more eclectic musical instruments evolved over the years.

The museum is worth a good few hours, if you are into this sort of thing. It is quite a surprise - almost a tardis - as it looks small from the outside, and yet holds vast quantities of exhibits. It contains everything from carved doors and ancient statues, to sarees and foot scrubbers.

The guides are more than happy to explain the provenance or story behind each item, and if you have time it is extremely worthwhile. Otherwise, it is easy to lose yourself in the wonder and grandeur of it all, and wander around realising that really, some things just haven't changed at all here since the sixteenth century.

For me the musical instrument section was particularly interesting - especially after having just read 'A Suitable Boy' by Vikram Seth (a must before you go to India), as the museum was displaying the sarangi played by the famous Khan.
