Raleighites are justifiably proud of our Greek Revival State Capitol, a dramatic cruciform building constructed in 1840. If you have an eye for classical architecture, the building's details (dome, mouldings, columns) may look familiar--they are patterned after specific ancient Greek temples. The exterior Doric columns, for example, are modeled after those of the Parthenon. Much of the ornamental work, such as the ironwork and chandeliers, came originally from Philadelphia, while the cabinetry was designed by a local artisan. The rotunda includes a copy of Canova's statue of George Washington depicted as a Roman general.

Today the building is used by the governor and lieutenant governor and their staffs.
