Pittsbugh's Mount Washington was named after the most famous Washington in the United States, George. He plays a significant part in the history of Pittsburgh, having spent much time in western Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War.
There are several overlook platforms perched on the edge of the hill that allow for an unobstructed view of downtown Pittsburgh and the city's three rivers: the Monongahela, the Allegheny, and the Ohio. Some locals claim the Three Rivers is a misnomer, that there are actually four. An underground river was discovered while building the fountain at Point State Park.
This location is the native Pittsburgher's first choice when it comes to showing out-of-town guests around the city. And it is impressive.
The location is an ideal place from which to take photographs anytime, but especially during "Light up Night," which occurs during the holiday season, or the annual 4th of July fireworks celebration. The best place to view most any celebration downtown is Mount Washington. Mount Washington is also the site of many marriage proposals; it's the most romantic place in the city and was voted the second best view in America by USA Weekend magazine.
Pittsburgh is no longer a city of smoke; it's a city of lights. From the lighted fountain at the Point where the rivers meet to lighted skyscrapers and the lights that twinkle on 15 bridges, it's a great city to see at night.
Some of the city's finest restaurants are located here as well. They include Le Mont, the Georgetown Inn, the Tin Angel, and a slew of others with food that is only surpassed by the views.
You can reach Mount Washington by car by crossing the Liberty Bridge from the Golden Triangle and making a right onto McArdle Road, but the most fun way to get there is by taking one of the inclines from Station Square.
