At first, Altadena seems simply a sleepy little community at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. There is no movie theater, no McDonald's, and no nightlife. However, there is history. The home of Zane Grey and Owen Brown (son of abolitionist John Brown), Altadena was once the millionare escape of the rich and famous. There are numerous hiking trails into the San Gabriel Mountains and the Eaton Canyon Nature Center introduces you to some of the natural wonders of the area. During the Christmas season, Altadena is famous throughout Southern California as tens of thousands of visitors come to see Christmas Tree Lane. In the spring, Altadena celebrates Old-Fashioned days and the entire town is decked out in the style of the Old West. From Pasadena, just follow Lake Avenue until you get to the top and you'll find Altadena. You can't miss it!
