We knew the hurricane was coming, so we booked our fishing trip for early in our stay. (This is my husband's favorite thing to do at the beach.) We arrived at the Oregon Inlet marina around 6am as directed by our captain. (Now this is dedication! He really likes fishing!) We had a very pleasant trip by boat into the sound. The sky was clear, the weather was beautiful, but the water was a brackish color. We only caught two fish, which were too small to keep. We did get to see some dolphins, which for me was the highlight of the trip. All in all, it is a very pleasant way to spend a day. The mate does the baiting of the hooks, heck! he even throws your line in the water for you. Just remember most of these trips don't provide snacks and drinks, you must pack your own.
