We walked up and down a mountain trail to view a 200-foot waterfall. I think Steamboat Springs is more beautiful and has more to do in the summer than in the winter. Unfortunately, all my photography files are over 200K.

Fish Creek Falls

We visited Fish Creek Falls around 10:30am in late October. I think it would probably look much better around noon, when the sun hits and lights it up. However, this place was absolutely beautiful. There are three pathways you can walk along: an overlook path, a longer "picnic" trail, and the path to the falls. The signage marks the path to the falls as being difficult, but it is not at all. It is a very well-maintained trail and only a very short walk down a hill to get to the falls. When you are there, you can take a more intense long hike if you choose, but we were content with just soaking in the natural beauty of the falls. This is a not-to-be-missed attraction!

This is a short hike down to the waterfall and then a moderate hike beyond the waterfall. My three and six-year-olds had no troubles getting to the fall and pleasantly surprised us with how far they hiked beyond the fall. This is a great family hike.

Fish Creek Falls

We have enjoyed picnic lunches at one of the many peaceful, secluded picnic areas at Fish Creek Falls. After our picnic, we walk down the trail, an easy 10-minute walk down to the falls.

The thundering waterfall plunges 283 feet and sprays water gently over us as we cross the wooden foot bridge on the trail. We have taken many family photographs right on the bridge.

On the path, we met a senior Forest Service volunteer host, who proudly told use that she has completed the 10.4 mile hike several times to Long Lake. "I walk two miles every day in the summer, " she says "and in the winter, I swim."

Some of our family continued upward from Fish Creek Falls on the Routt National Forest trail and climbed several more miles. Routt National Forest comprises nearly 1.5 millions acres of aspen and conifer forests and mountain meadows, all crossed by miles of trails, which are great for mountain hiking.

TO GET TO Fish Creek Falls from downtown Steamboat, follow the signs from 3rd and Lincoln to Fish Creek Falls Road and drive three miles to the parking lot at the end of the unpaved road.
