Description: Kampen has a history of tobacco. In 1920 Kampen had had 110 factories for cigars. Per week 1.5 milion cigars were made by hand, by about 40 percent of the working population. One of the most interesting factories from these old days of the East Indian Trade, still survives in the factory of The Olifant, since 1832. It is the top of the Dutch cigar brands. In these days of multinationals and globalisation, Olifant still survives as a small factory for an exclusive customer circle only. Their factory is open on appointment and they have a terrific shop, completely designed in style, although their products are not cheap. In the rest of Kampen you will be able to see how big the tobacco industry had been in the past. Storehouses, factories and villas of the tradesmen and owners of the factories has all been preserved.
