Description: Kidron is a small, unincoporated village in northeast Ohio, in the midst of Amish country. Kidron is the home of Lehman's Hardware and Appliances, a store that specializes in non-electric items for the Amish, their primary customers, and anyone else who prefers this kind of merchandise.
Lehman's is a leading seller of oil lamps, butter churns, hand tools, gas refrigerators, and more. Other stock in this store includes items such as cast iron pots and pans, copper kettles, hand pumps, carving tools, and apple peelers. Lehman's also has one of the largest selections of wood stoves in North America. In other words, if there is something in the way of hardware that you need or want that does not require electric power, Lehman's probably has it.
I spent a couple of hours wandering through the store, looking at items that I have not seen in nearly 50 years. I grew up in rural Appalachia, and electric power was just not available on the ridge where my family lived until the late 1940's. As a result, I can remember living without electricity and watching my parents use many of these tools and utensils.
To get to the store from Wooster, Ohio, travel east on U.S. Route 30 for 10 miles, turning right (south) onto Kidron Road (County Road 52). Kidron is four miles south of Route 30.
Lehman's Hardware is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day of the week except Sunday.
The phone number of the store is 330-857-5757.
Lehman's is about 60 miles from the Apple Valley Resort in Howard.
By the way, there are small shops in Kidron that sell hand-made crafts, including quilts and furniture, and they are all within easy walking distance of Lehman's. There is also a flea market in Kidron on Saturdays during the warmer months.
