Hilton Head Island Beach

Hilton Head Island has miles and miles of great beaches! I heard that they just fixed the beaches up right before we visited, adding new fresh sand and extending the beach area. The beach was fun and safe for the kids to run around and play. The beach was not very crowded and there was plenty of beachside shops and restaurants to enjoy. There are lifeguards on duty and the water was not rough. At all the public beach access areas there were vendors renting chairs, umbrellas, body boards, etc. This website has great info on the beaches of Hilton Head Island - www.hiltonheadislandbeach.com

The beach at Barony Beach was beautiful. It is the perfect size. It has just been replenished. The sand is compact enough to go for a bike ride along the shore. A little further back the sand is fluffy and perfect for sand castles. The beach is clean and well kept. Dogs are allowed on the beach. Foot shower is available.

Hilton Head beaches

We visited Hilton Head for Christmas, so it was winter and therefore too cold to go swimming or various other water activities. Even though your choices were limited, there was plenty to do. We rented bikes, and since our hotel was near the beach, we rode there most of the days we had the bikes. It was lots of fun chasing the seagulls around, and skidding through the sand at high speeds. We saw lots of other people having fun also. People went fishing, flying kites in the high winds, collected shells, and there were a lot of really neat sandcastles (view pics). The beaches were also very clean. We saw no trash lying around, and the water was fairly clean too.

The sand is hard-packed near the water, and we rode about three miles along before turning around. It looks the same as far as you can see in both directions. The guidebooks say that there are 12 miles of beaches. I'm sure that in the summer, the beaches are more crowded.

The beaches are very nice and there are lifeguards along the beach. We rented bikes during our stay and enjoyed riding the bikes at night during low tide and picking up shells. The beaches are very wide, so you don't feel crowded.

Sand is hard and you are able to ride your bike on it. It is nice to walk up and down the beach just to look at the homes on the beach.
