It was a nice tour, but long. Be in shape or you will get tired fast. You get to go to the lighthouse.

The island is flat, the bikes are well tuned and have relatively fat tires, and the seats are easily adjusted for height. Get a wagon for towing all your beach gear, since it only costs an extra 16 dollars per week for the wagon. You can ride your bike on the beach (it's okay with the rental company!) to some really quiet areas, and that way you get away from the crowds. There are showers and bathrooms at all the pathways down onto the beach so you can wash off the sand.

Relatively flat but scenic paths for the whole family to bicyle are all through Shipyard Plantation. Also, the beach is wide and flat for great bicycling. Access by the big hotel. In Hilton Head, there are bike paths everywhere, so you can venture out, too.

Biking along the ocean and along HH's bike paths

  • August 28, 2003

Sailing along the beach, wind in my hair, sun on my face, watching the dolphins on a parallel race along the shore has got to be one of the more sublime memories I have of riding a bike in Hilton Head. It is closely followed by the sheer fun of mentally playing 18 - 27 holes of golf, while racing madly around the cart paths of the course at Ship Yard Plantation. Hilton Head Island is also covered with bike paths, also utilized by rollerbladers and walkers. It's fun for people of all ages and abilities. I have always rented from Pedals (great personalized service, new bikes that are well maintained), but there are many rental places on the island. It's a great way to see the gators and the rest of the wildlife.

The bike trains are wonderful. You can ride all over the island and even on the beach. We rode everywhere, even to and from dinner. We spotted several gators in the many lakes along the trails.
