The ascent of the volcano takes about four hours from base at Finca Magdalena. The last part is very steep with lots of mud, but the view is well worth it. There are several lookout points, where you can chill in the shade and view the other volcano on the island, Volcan Concepcion, which is active, so you cannot climb to its top.
Behold the sparkling lake and green grass on the inside of the Maderas crater. Guides can be hired in advance for the descent into the crater. Only experienced climbers should attempt the descent unassisted. It's only about a 30-foot drop, but slippery because the rainforest is moist.
