The boat tour ($60 per person when booked through Great Southern Railways) takes in the two bottom gorges, and it is necessary to change boats, as there is rocky section between the gorges that cannot be navigated in a boat (or a canoe). This section involves a short walk over fairly well-made and -maintained paths.
The second gorge has more impressive cliffs and scenery, and there is a real difference between the first and the last cruise of the day. The first cruise leaves shortly after 9am, which is a bit late for the early morning "sunrise" glow. The last cruise of the day offers much more impressive lighting. We also found that with the last cruise of day (which we did on a second trip to Katherine), the water was much calmer. With fewer ripples on the water, the reflections were stunning.
