I arrived at Itaipu Dam with two or three hours to wait before the next tour. The receptionist suggested a visit to the agricultural center nearby, which includes a small museum and zoo. The only way to get there is by a 20-minute walk along the highway (in the direction back to Ciudad del Este). It turned out to be a worthwhile diversion. It has lots of exhibits indoors on the local ecosystem and ways of life. Outdoors is a small zoo featuring animals and birds of the region. The staff is extremely friendly and willing to visit and answer questions.
