Gray Line Tour Lines operates this particular tour every day during the winter months. The tour costs 14 pounds per adult, but discounts for children, students, and seniors are available.
The bus will pick you up and drop you off at your inn if you wish, or you can meet the tour at the Balmoral Hotel on Princes Street. The tour starts at 9:30am and concludes at 6pm.
I assume it would depend on the guide, but the guide I had, Brian, was extremely informative. Throughout most of the tour, he told us the history of landmarks passed or about Scotland's history in general. He knew quite a lot about each stop we made, and made it easy to learn instead of tedious. When he had nothing to talk to us about, he would play Scottish music, most of which was very entertaining.
We first drove through Glasgow. We didn't have the time to stop, which was disappointing, but we saw main areas of Glasgow, in case we chose to visit on our own time. Next, we drove to Loch Lomond and stopped for a photo stop. The Loch was very beautiful. We had the chance to either take a cruise of the Loch, or walk around the surrounding countryside. I chose the cruise, which ran 5.20 quid. The cruise lasted an hour, and the boat had a refreshment stand and an above-deck observation area. The boat director told us the history of the Loch and its surrounding properties.
After reboarding the bus, we then drove through the Trossachs, which was basically a forest. We didn't spot any wildlife, which was disappointing, but the foliage, combined with the brief bout of rain, made for beautiful view.
We then stopped in Aberfoyle for lunch, and then loaded back up into the bus for the trip to Stirling Castle.
For around 8 quid, you were allowed inside the castle for either an audio tour, a guided tour, or you could tour the grounds at your own pace. I chose to go at my own pace. The castle was full of history, and I was quite awestruck to be walking the same grounds that men such as Robert the Bruce once strode. The castle is an absolute must-see.
I was the very last drop-off at the end of the tour, and I quite enjoyed my day. If you happen to take the tour and end up with Brian, tell him I said hi.
