getting involved

Another way to spend your time in the mountains is to get involved in the daily routine of the family. This may mean gathering wood, collecting water, helping in the fields, helping make tortillas or just entertaining the kids. At times when you are doing some of this things it is hard to guess who is having the most fun, you or the locals. For instance one of my most memorable days in all of Guatemala, was spent helping a Chicabnab family harvest their maize (corn). I enjoyed it a lot; it was a crystal clear day you could see for miles. The scenery was amazing. The whole family also enjoyed watching me as I stumbled around on the side of the hill trying to carry a full bag of maize back to the house. The children of the families are great fun, once they are over their shyness about you. They will always want to play. Many times when you have a spare moment, very quickly the kids will produce a ball of some kind. This means soccer. The main thing to remember is that get involved is what this tour is all about. Experiencing life from a different perspective.
