Early morning is the best time to go for a hike. The father/man/guide of your family will take you. Most times if there are animals nearby the guides will know, Quetzals and Monkeys are the main ones. The guides have a great knack of finding quetzals especially in the breeding season March to May during this time the birds become very active looking for mates and nesting trees. Most tourists manage to see quetzals. Some see over 2 morning hikes 10 or more. This is quite amazing as the bird is in danger of extinction. I have managed to see birds all times that I have visited here, the most 7 or 8 on one morning. The howler monkeys of the area are very hard to see, but trust me, if one is nearby you will hear its roar. It is something like a cross between a wild pig and a roaring bear...amazing. Walking through the forest here is in many cases just enough, the ancient flora and fauna is impressive from large tree terns to tiny orchids, you are constantly surrounded by a huge biodiversity of species.
