Description: Chitwan Nat'l. Park is listed as a World Heritage Site and protects over 360 sq. miles of marshland, Sal forests, grassland and a variety of birds & animals. It was created by UNESCO in 1973 and is one of the top draws to Nepal. Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, the park is home to the One Horned Rhino and the elusive Bengal Tiger. It is rich in flora and fauna and extends in what is called the central Terai Region of Nepal.
Villages in the area are a mixture of many types of people including the indigenous Tharu people who have inhabited the area for centuries. They are hard working and farming is their main industry. Their small lots of mustard, wheat & rice and bananna trees provide food. Their homes are built from local materials which are cool in the summer and warm in the winter. When their day is done, they meet at the house, roll out stored mats to sit on and share their meal. When done, they shake out the mats and they are used for sleeping.
Poaching and illegal trade within the park has pretty much been halted with not only the park staff but with the Tharu villages helping to "keep an eye out." Malaria also has been eradicated throughout Nepal, including Chitwan. I would still suggest taking precautions such as long sleeve pants and shirts and repellant. I would also suggest earth tone colors for clothes and skip the scented personal creams, deodorants, etc.
The landscape is spectacular with it's lush vegetation and the Himalayas for a backdrop. Situated along the Narayani & Rapti Rivers, the park has over 350 species of birds which makes it one of the highest concentrations of birds in one area worldwide. Beautiful peacocks with their tails fanned out, Long tailed strikes, Gray headed woodpeckers, Kingfishers and many other birds can be seen along the banks of the river.
Although the lodges and hotels within Chitwan Nat'l. Park have closed, there are many accomadations on the edge of the park. Most of these have programs to visit the park including elephant safaris through the Terai, canoe trips on the Rapti River, hiking within the park and to visit the villages, visits to the Gharial breeding center, etc.
