Glass Beach

Description

While visiting and staying the night in Fort Bragg, California, we made a visit to Glass Beach. Glass Beach is on the coast in Mendocino County. When we arrived in Fort Bragg, we asked the owner of the Ocean Breeze Motel what things there were to do in Fort Bragg. She told us about a place called Glass Beach. We were told it was once an old dumping ground, but that we should go and visit. After being told about Glass Beach, we did not know what to expect when we arrived. We drove from the motel on Highway 1 east until we came to Glass Beach Drive, where we parked in the lot, and started our walk, through the gates and down the road to the beach. What we found is that this is not your ordinary beach.

To our delight and amazement, we found this to be one of the most unusual and unique beaches you can imagine. After parking our van, we walked down the trail to Glass Beach. We were amazed at the beautiful tide pools along the beach with an abundance of crabs and mollusks. The small waterfall, which looks like it is coming from a sewer drain tube, was quite unusual. Once a public dump, nature and years of wave action along the coast, have deposited tons of polished glass onto the beaches shores. Broken bottles have been worn down by the sea into glistening, colorful, translucent pebbles. The kids spent the next 2 hours collecting polished glass pieces from the beach. Some of these pieces of glass were beautiful, and the kids really enjoyed themselves. You also occasionally run across some old pieces of autos and small pieces of steel along the shores. There are also quite a few amazing tide pools, where an abundance of small crabs, and mollusks make their homes. It is very easy to spend a couple of hours here discovering what used to be a old dump. The sunset at Glass Beach was truly amazing.
