Marvel Superhero Island: Where Heroes Are Born

Marvel Superhero Island is the first themed land you'll encounter on your day at Islands of Adventure. Whether you're in the park or not, it's hard to miss - the bright green Incredible Hulk Coaster stands tall and proud over the entire park. You can actually see it from I4, the main highway leading across Central Florida, which adds to the thrill and anticipation of what's sure to be an exciting day. "Exciting" is the key word here. Of the five themed islands making up the park, Marvel Superhero Island is the place to be for thrill seekers due to the fact that it houses two of the park's most incredible attractions.

Have you ever dreamed of being a Superhero? This is the place to do it! While Marvel Superhero Island definitely caters to all demographics, it's especially exciting for young boys who are sick of the princesses and giant animal characters over at Disney World. This land screams "non-stop action," and really puts you right in the middle of your favorite superhero stories. There are large, colorful buildings set to look like the famed Gotham City. It's not quite New York, but it's close. Giant cutouts of Marvel characters, both heroes and villains, line the buildings, pathways, and restaurants. There are lots of huge yellow and green slabs of steel twisted and turned into lamp posts, benches, superhero cars and special air crafts. If you ever wondered what it would be like to be in a Marvel comic book or movie scene... this is it.

There are four major attractions in Marvel Superhero Island. One of them is the lean, green monster known as the Incredible Hulk Coaster, where you soar over Islands of Adventure at incredible speeds as if you were the Incredible Hulk himself. Then there's my personal favorite, The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman. Part dark ride, part simulator, and part 4D show, this is an award-winning attraction the likes of which can't be found anywhere else in the world. Also in the area is Dr. Doom's Fearfall (a fun free-fall ride) and Storm Force Accelatron (a twist on the spinning teacups). The rides here are fast and furious, so be ready to hang on tight.

If all the screaming you do leaves you hungry, there are several counter service options available in Marvel Superhero Island. The options include Cafe 4 and the Captain America Diner, two classic burger-and-fry joints where you can catch some traditional theme park food at affordable prices. The food isn't anything special, especially compared to other options in the park, but it isn't bad.

When it comes to shopping, there's everything you could possibly need to make a superhero fan happy. The Comic Book Shop offers some of Marvel's most famous and hard to find comic books, while the Spiderman Store caters specifically to Spidey fans. If you're looking for a more general selection, the Marvel Alterniverse Store has t-shirts, mugs, key chains, shot glasses, collectibles, DVDs, comic books and even stuffed animals of Marvel's most sought-after superheroes. If superheroes aren't really you're thing, you can browse through Oakley, a small shop selling the brand's sunglasses.

Marvel Superhero Island can not be missed on a trip to Islands of Adventure. It's full of thrills, chills and non-stop action sure to make anyone's day a little more exciting. For an even more memorable experience, you can stop here to meet some of Islands of Adventure most famous characters throughout the day, including Spiderman, Captain America and the Fantastic Four.

An Adventure Not To Be Missed

An Adventure Not To Be Missed

Islands of Adventure is the newest Theme Park in the Orlando area and it is certainly worth a visit. The design is fantastic and each separate "island" is themed magnificently to really submerge you in the theme-park experience. The "islands" are actually simply areas they are not separated by water but they do all have their own characteristics and rides. Visiting in October the lines are not unbearable but for high season it is possible to buy Universal Express passes that allow you to go to the front of the queues.

--Marvel Super Heroes—

The most eye-catching, awe-inspiring ride as you approach Islands of Adventure is the Incredible Hulk rollercoaster, the huge green frame towers over you as you enter the island. This is a real white-knuckle ride that should not be missed, the speed of acceleration is breath-taking and the whole ride with all its twists and turns is one to be experienced again and again. Universal operate the "child-sway" system here so if you have children too small to ride the adults can all have a go without having to stand inline again. Dr.Dooms Fearfall is a ride suitable only for those with a head for heights. You are strapped in around a tower and shot up into the air. The views across the flat Florida countryside are wonderful, as long as you are brave enough to open your eyes! The other great attraction in this area is the simulator ride that is The Amazing Adventure of Superman, the effects are brilliant, you feel like you are falling from tower blocks or being attacked by the enemies, this is a 3D adventure so you will have to wear those trendy glasses to get the full effects.

There are a couple of smaller attractions but time should be spent just walking around and appreciating the recreations of the marvel comic skylines. Lockers are available here that you must use if you are intending on riding the Hulk as you cannot take any bags on at all.

--Toon Lagoon—

This area recreates the cartoon adventure of Popeye. There is an adventure playground with water features set around the boat. Several of the rides will get you very wet. Dudley Do-Rights Ripsaw Falls is a log-flume ride with a heart-stopping drop that literally sends you through the surface of the water. People standing on the bridge watching will also get their fair share of water too. If you are not wet enough after this then head to the Bilge-rat barges, this raft ride will guarantee everyone gets soaked. This is not a ride where you may get a little wet, if you are not wearing the waterproof capes you will be thoroughly drenched. Great fun but don’t ride before the weather has heated up.

The general area has lots of photo opportunities with cannons and speech bubbles that you can pose with.

--Jurassic Park—

Anyone that enjoys the films will love this area. You walk through the majestic gates with the theme tune playing and you feel that you could be in the film. The lush planting and footprints on the path all add to the general atmosphere. The Jurassic Park River Ride takes you through the science centre but there has been a Dinosaur escape to be prepared for anything. The Pteranadon Flyers are a gentle ariel ride, they are quite pleasant but the queue gets so long it is really not worth waiting for.

A Dinosaur bone-yard is the setting for an unbelievably exciting play area that children will love but unfortunately there is not a lot of seating for tired parents, you just have to perch a bit of rock while you wait. The visitors centre is a recreation of the centre from the film and there are interactive exhibits and sometimes a baby triceratops is on hand to be stroked and petted.

--The Lost Continent—

This area is probably the weakest and some of it will be incorporated and re-themed as part of the new Harry Potter area that will open in 2010. One of the best rides of the park is here. Duelling Dragons is a suspended coaster, tow coasters run on opposing tracks at the same time and you get the impression whilst riding that you are almost touching. This is an exhilarating ride but the walk through the castle to get to it seems never ending, if you want to ride again when you get off keep your eyes open for the "ride again" sign. If it is not too busy they open a shortcut from the exit to the queue so that you do not have to trail all through the castle again. Poseidon’s Fury is a walkthrough, guide led attraction. It mainly consists of special effects but some positions allow very little viewing and it is rather predictable and uninspiring.

--Seuss Landing—

Fans of the Dr Seuss books will love this brightly coloured area where everything is just like the books. Caro-Seuss-el is a traditional style carousel but the children (and adults!) get to ride characters from the books. 1fish/2fish is a light hearted ride based around the verse; if you follow it correctly you don’t get wet but as it gets faster there is bound to be water heading your way. The sky ride trolley takes you around the area but lines build up quickly which is a shame because it would particularly appeal to young children. The Cat-in-the-Hat is often wondering around in the area for children to meet.

Each area is unique. Each part has its own styled restaurants and shops that offer a more unusual selection than you will normally find at theme parks. As usual for Orlando the whole park is spotlessly clean and the staff are all cheery and helpful. Due to the layout of this park there does seem to be a lot of walking involved so it would be wise to have strollers for younger children.

This is an "all-action" park, there are not many places to sit and relax and there are no shows or parades to give a little respite from rides. The colours and settings are magnificent but it is also a very tiring park but definitely one that shouldn’t be missed.

What an Adventure!

Islands of Adventure (IoA) is part of the Universal Studios group and was built around 12 years ago. I was in Orlando with 3 friends so we were keen on theme parks with more exciting rides to offer and IoA did not disappoint.

GETTING THERE:
IoA is part of the same park complex that holds Universal Studios. You just need to get onto the I4, the main road through Orlando, and it is signposted off this. There is a ridiculous amount of parking available. Make sure you remember which character and which number you are parked in otherwise you'll be searching for that rental car for hours! The car park gets stupidly busy on the way out so try to avoid leaving at the same time as everyone else.

PRICES:
We got a day pass which covered Universal and IoA. These cost us about $80 each. We needed a ticket like this as we only had a limited time and wanted to see both parks. However, I wouldn't get this ticket unless you can also get the Express Plus passes. These give you queue jump rights to each ride in each park once. These passes cost between $25 and $50 depending on which day you go. We paid $50 for ours but without them there was no way we would have done both parks in one day. The queues can be over an hour on a busy day so we would have only done a few rides. There are numerous different combinations of tickets which include IoA. Remember to look around the net before you go as there are bargains.

OPENING:
The park is open every day of the year. The opening times vary, with longer hours in the summer and at the weekends. It is a good idea to check the website for details.

THE EXPERIENCE:
IoA is made up of different 'islands'. We headed to Marvel Super Hero Island first.

The first ride we went on was the Incredible Hulk Coaster. This ride is easy to spot from anywhere in the park - it's the huge green one! The ride goes nearly 70 mph and goes from 0 to 40 in 2 seconds. The ride is a must for anyone who likes roller coasters. It also goes upside down 7 times. We all absolutely loved it! It is not for the feint hearted however, it did leave us feeling a little wobbly!

The next ride we headed for was The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman. This is a ride that involves wearing those lovely 3D glasses that make you look attractive! At first I wasn't sure what to expect from this ride, I thought the car might just pivot on its axis with a movie played in front of you, but the car moves through the ride. You are with Spiderman on an adventure, moving through a city. It really feels like you are part of it and are falling etc. The special effects on the ride are amazing and the 3D feel is very real. There are added effects, like heat when things are supposed to have exploded and water gets sprayed at you. This is a great ride for everyone, and one of the adventurous rides that slightly younger children can go on.

The other main ride in Super Hero Island is Doctor Doom's Fear Fall. I didn't go on this one as I'm not brilliant with heights, but two of my friends did and they loved it. For this one you are sitting on the outside of a tower. The ride pulls you to the top and then without warning you get dropped down the tower. You bounce back up the tower again. Any loose shoes have to be removed for this one (otherwise there would be people being knocked out by size 9s all over the place!). Again not a ride for the feint hearted with the height, although the view must be amazing from up there.
The only other ride in this area was the Storm Force Acceletron. This is supposed to be one of the tamer rides but to me it looked a little like the spinning tea cups in Disney (i.e. looked like they would make you feel more queasy than all the rides that go upside down put together!).

The next 'island' we headed for was Toon Lagoon. This area has two themes, cartoons and getting very wet! We went on Dudley Do Right's Ripsaw Falls first. This is a character that I wasn't really familiar with so the story of the ride meant little to me. The ride is basically a log flume. You will get wet - so go early so you can dry off or make sure you have a change of clothes! I really like these rides, although I wouldn't be so keen if the Florida sun wasn't there to get me dry afterwards!

The other ride here was Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges. We thought we were wet from the log flume, but we didn't know what wet was until this ride. This ride is basically a trip on river rapids in a big circular boat. There is water from the rapids, from waterfalls and from people on the side who can squirt you on the way round! You will get absolutely drenched on this ride, but we laughed all the way round, it is huge fun! For the little ones there is Me Ship, The Olive, where they can explore Popeye's ship.

Our third island was Jurassic Park. The only ride we went on here was the Jurassic Park River Adventure. Again, this ride will get you slightly wet. The idea of this is that you are on a river cruise as a tourist to Jurassic Park, when you are taken the wrong way and the fences don't hold the dinosaurs any more. If you like the films you'll like this ride. We all enjoyed it although again, be prepared for the water!

Also in this area you can explore about dinosaurs. For children there is the Pteranodon Flyers, a small coaster where you fly over the area. There is also Camp Jurassic which is like an adventure playground.

Next onto The Lost Continent. Again we only went on one ride here: the Duelling Dragons. This is a double ride, where you can choose which coaster out of 'fire' and 'ice' you want to ride. The two sides of the ride set off at the same time and throughout the ride you feel like you are coming close to the other coaster. You supposedly come within 18 inches of each other on the ride which is a little scary! Another great coaster which we all really enjoyed. It doesn't go as fast as some but the thrill of riding so close to the other ride is great!

Also here is the Eighth Voyage of Sinbad which is a live stunt show and Poseidon's Adventure where you go through a temple, again with live effects. We didn't have time for either of these but they would be good if you have children as they have no height restrictions.

The last part of the park is the Seuss Landing. We didn't go on any of the rides here as they are really for younger children. The rides here are based on characters from Dr Seuss. Not really for us but great if you have little ones.

FOOD:
There are lots of choices for food in IoA. I can highly recommend the frozen lemonades that you can buy from various stalls from around the park. We ate in a restaurant in the Jurassic Park section of the park, the Thunder Falls Terrace. This was a restaurant that served ribs and chicken with salads. The food in the park seems to be generally fast food in nature. The food we had was quite tasty and filled a hole. The prices weren't extortionate. Each area of the park has restaurant and also stands where you can buy drinks and snacks. #

SHOPPING:
Each area of the park has at least two shops. There are shops linked to the rides in the park. There are also general shops which sell Universal Studios souvenirs. There is a Christmas shop and a sweet shop near to the entrance. The prices in the shops are about average for a theme park in America.

CONCLUSION:
If you are in Orlando doing the theme park thing then IoA needs to be near the top of your list. It is definitely one of my favourites and the rides are excellent. The adrenalin will be pumping after these rides. There is also plenty if you have little ones. The prices are expensive but theme parks always are and there are ways to make it cheaper. I'll definitely be going again next time I'm in Orlando and they'll building a Harry Potter adventure to be open by 2010 so there's another excuse for a visit!

Amazing Park

Amazing Park

Universal Studios Islands of Adventure is the second part of the Universal experience. The Islands of Adventure are accessed from the same car parks as Universal Studios, but after passing the bag check area you need to turn left at the city walk rather than right.

The party is split into six areas, Marvel Super Heroes, Toon Lagoon, Jurassic Park, the Lost Continent and Seuss Landing.

Marvel Super Heroes

The first ride you come across in this section is the Incredible Hulk coaster; unfortunately my daughter was too small to ride on this ride so I can't tell you much about it, apart from to say it looks amazing.

Doctor Doom’s Fear Fall is the next to ride you come across, where we passed by this ride the wait time was only five minutes so we decided to give it a try without actually looking up to see what sort of ride it was. It was only when the doors opened to our seats that I realised it was the ride we'd seen from the other side of the park, and was one of those rides that shot you up into the air at high speeds. The initial experience of being catapulted into the air is quite fun, but that's it really and the next few seconds of the ride where it bounces up and down a few times is a bit dull. So on the whole I give this 6/10.

The next ride we went on was the Amazing Adventures of Spiderman. This is a 3-D ride in which Spiderman is trying to save New York from Goblin and a few of the other comic book villains (I can’t remember their names because Marvel comics weren't something I used to read as a child). The 3-D effects are really good and you really feel like you are flying around even though you are sitting safely in your car. We went on this ride three times in all so I have to give it a 9/10.

Also in this area you will find Storm Force Acceleration, however I can't even remember seeing it so I can't say anything about it at all.

Toon Lagoon

The first ride we went on was Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge Rat Barges. This is a ride where you sit in a boat with seven other people, a clue to how wet you get on this ride is given when you get on the boat and notice that there is a section in the middle that is covered over so you can keep your bags and cameras dry, which is something I've never seen on a water ride before. On the ride you go over different rapids and bounce about from one side of the river to the other, as you go the rapids huge waves splosh into the boat, you might think at this point that if you're lucky you'll get the seat that manages to miss all the water, but then you go through a couple of waterfalls so there isn’t a single person who stays dry. Having said that the ride is a lot of fun and we actually went on it twice, I'm giving this ride and 8/10 purely because it's so horrible walking round soggy for the next couple of hours.

Whilst we were wet we decided to go on the other water ride in Toon Lagoon which is Dudley do Right’s Rip Saw Falls. This is a ride based on the TV series Dudley do Right which I've never watched so the characters meant nothing to me or to the kids. The ride is more of an old fashion log flume than the previous ride and just has a couple of big drops, the second of which is the steepest and the wettest. Not a bad ride 7/10.

The other attraction in this area is the Me ship, The Olive, which is a rather strange name. This isn't a ride it's a small playground area for children which has slides and water cannons to shoot at people on Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge barges, and a couple of other interactive things. At nine and 11 my kids were a little too old for this attraction.

Jurassic Park

The main ride in this area is the Jurassic Park River Adventure, this is yet another water ride where you travel along in a boat and entered Jurassic Park. There you get to see some of the different dinosaurs in the Park, a couple of which kindly spray you with water as you're going past. It's quite pleasant ride until you enter the raptor area when suddenly you start to go up and find yourself facing the T Rex, luckily just before the T Rex decides to eat you the ride drops away and you plummet to the river below, getting soaked in the process. I would have given this ride an 8.5/10, but two of the three times we went on the ride when it came to exiting the worker who was controlling the boats made it jolt quite badly and it really hurt my back, so because of that I can only give it 5/10.

Just opposite the River adventure you'll find Camp Jurassic, this is a huge playground with lots of slides, rope bridges and water cannons. My kids really enjoyed the water cannon flights with the other kids who were there, and it also gives parents time to have a rest. In this area you'll also find the Pteranadon Flyers, this is a ride just for children where they can fly around the area and see camp Jurassic from a bird’s eye view. I was sat near the entrance whilst waiting for my children to go the ride and really felt sorry for the young girl who was allowing people into the ride. The amount of adults that were arguing with her because they wanted to go on the ride was ridiculous. And when my kids came off the ride it turned out it wasn’t worth the effort anyway, they both came saying it was really boring.

The Lost Continent

We actually missed out this section both of the times we went to the Islands of adventure, there was nothing here that really gripped the children's imaginations, and none of the rides really interested them.

Seuss Landing

The only ride in the entire park that had a queue over 30 minutes on the two days we went was the high in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride, and after waiting 30 minutes to go on the ride I have to say I have absolutely no idea why the queue so long. The ride takes you over the top of Seuss Landing so you get to look down on everybody and get different view of the area, whilst at the same time you hear a Seuss style story of the alphabet being read out, but the ride is so slow you could almost fall asleep whilst riding on it. A very poor 2/10 for me.

The next ride is the Cat in the Hat, another ride for younger children. You ride on the couch through the story of the book, having never read the book I can't say how accurate it is but it's not an exciting ride, there are a couple of times when the couch spins around but that's about as wild as it gets. 5/10 for this.

There is a Caro-euss-el, which is basically a carousel with Seuss characters and is about as much fun as your average carousel. 5/10.

The final ride One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. This is an octopus style ride which goes round and the arms open down individually depending on whether person riding wants to steer up or down. The ride plays a little tune which tells the rider went to go up or down in order to avoid getting wet, however I'm sure everybody gets wet anyway. 7/10 for this ride.

Shops and cafes

As you'd expect there are shops at the exits of the majority of rides, each shop sells souvenirs which are based on the characters in that ride or in the area. There are also plenty of shops which sell a little bit of everything, including characters you'll find in the Universal Studios side of the parks.

There are also plenty of cafes around the Park, these mainly sell fast food, pizza, fried chicken, etc. But in Toon Lagoon you will also find Chinese, Italian and Mexican food, or in the Lost Continent you'll find some healthy salads.

Then all around the Park there are snack bars for you to top up your drinks and buy crisps or pretzels, etc.

Ah! Quite Possibly the Best Theme Park in the World!

Ah! Quite Possibly the Best Theme Park in the World!

We visited Islands of Adventure for a day and absolutely loved it. This is the only theme park I have ever visited that I consider on par with Disney parks. The themes in the park are well done, the rides are more intense and thrilling than Disney rides, and the crowds and waits in line are much less than at the Disney counterparts. If you visit Orlando, be sure to include trips to both Disney World parks and this park. If you have enough time, visit Universal Studios too. However, if you don't and must choose this park is a much better choice than Universal Studios.

Similar to the Magic Kingdom, this park has a hub and spoke set up with the different themed areas radiating around in a circle. You enter through the Port of Entry. First hit Marvel Super Hero Island. Ride the absolutely amazing Incredible Hulk Coaster. The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman is also an excellent attraction that should be visited in the morning before lines get long. Be sure to avoid Dr. Doom's Fearfall. This attraction is poorly done. It is a life and drop tower, but it drops and bounces slowly and is absolute rubbish in comparison to the outstanding Tower of Terror at MGM.

Next is Toon Lagoon, a land that brings the Sunday Comics to life. This land has two great water rides that absolutely soak you, often to the point of extreme discomfort. My group wore ponchos on the ride and even wrapped our feet in grocery bags so our socks and shoes wouldn't be soaked for the rest of the day. Dudley Do Right's Ripsaw Falls is a log flume drop like Splash Mountain, but is more intense because the drop is longer and steeper and the ride vehicles are smaller. Popeye and Bluto's Bilge Rat Barges is a water rapids ride. It's fun and not too intense, but this one can absolutely soak you.

Jurassic Park doesn't offer many rides, but the land, created so similar to the movie, is very exciting. The main attraction is the Jurassic Park River Adventure. This is a boat ride with many dinosaur animatronics that culminates with an 85 foot drop.

Next is the Lost Continent. The theme of this land, based on ancient myths and legends, is my favorite. The main attraction here, and my favorite in the park, is the amazing Dueling Dragons. This is a suspended coaster (your feet are dangling). There is a red Fire coaster and a blue Ice coaster. The two ride vehicles have different tracks, but on three occasions nearly miss the other coaster. Make sure to ride both coasters because the experience is different.

Finally, you will reach Seuss Landing. This one is geared toward children, but adults can still enjoy the crazy colors and scenery that serve as true eye candy. There is a Cat in the Hat ride and the delightful Caro-Seuss-el. Also, be sure to get an actual Green Eggs and Ham Sandwich!
