Description: Heaven on earth is how I describe the waters of the Caribbean in Cancun. The colors are amazing and change all day long...from a light aqua in the early morning to deep blue in the afternoon. The sand can only be described as super-soft and powdery white. I liken it to women's loose face powder...it's that soft. While the beaches on the Caribbean side are gorgeous, the water here can be dangerous and not the best for swimming or wading. Strong undertows and crashing waves make it a struggle to stay on your feet and can pull you out to sea if you're not careful. For calmer waters, head towards the tip of the peninsula. A good starting point is to take the bus to the Xcaret terminal across from the Plaza Caracol. Head straight towards the Xcaret terminal and keep going until you hit the beach (a very short walk). Here the beaches are wider and the waters much calmer. This is a good place to swim or wade and to practice snorkeling. There are some palapas on the beach, but they are reserved for customers of the neighboring restaurants and bars. No shade is to be had, so come early and don't stay out too long (you will be sorry, trust me). Wear a good sunscreen and consider a hat. Bring plenty of drinking water too because the sun is intense and you will become dehydrated quickly.
