Arts First Weekend

  • June 10, 2002
  • Rated 4 of 5 by SophiaAlexandra from Bostone, Massachusetts
For one weekend in May, the city of Cambridge goes all out for the arts. And by arts, I mean anything from classical opera to electric guitar performances; amateur magicians performing on the streets to Hamlet's soliloquoy delivered from the stage. The Arts First celebration is funded by the city of Cambrige and by Harvard University, and it's centered in Harvard Square, where volunteers rush around handing out schedules detailing the more than ninety artistic opportunities taking place all day, simultaneously, at over sixteen different locations campus-wide. Saturday and Sunday are equally packed with activities, performances, and exhibitions, and tons of Cambridge residents, from young families to retired couples, attend. For visitors to Boston, however, this is a unique chance to see the Square at its best - relaxed, inviting, and celebrating the arts. With almost no exceptions, the Arts First events are free and open to the public.
