Ann Arbor Art Fair

I have been to the Fairs nearly every year for the last 20 years, and even spent a few years working at one of the T-shirt booths on S. University (which is my preference of the three). The S. University fair tends to be a little less crowded, but parking is also more scarce. The State Street has to be the most crowded, in my opinion, and the Main Street area has the most food. Do not wait until the last day for this one, by far always the most crowded. Though it may seem far to some, if you park at the Main Street end, it is not far to walk to S. University, and you can experience the city while you walk. Going through the diag and law quad area, usually less crowded than State to S. University. Even if you are not into the art, like me, or can't afford it, the people-watching and food is great!

It is HUGE! Bring walking shoes, comfy ones, and bottled water. You need lots of money to spend on unique art, everything from kitschy things to high-end luxury items!

Ann Arbor Street Art Fair

One of three art fairs held annually in Ann Arbor, the outdoor summer event is probably the most popular. People come from all over to what is considered one of the best art shows in the country. Along 26 blocks throughout the downtown area, artists of wildly varying tastes and abilities compete for the judges' attention as well as impulse shoppers.

Much of the artwork and crafts on display are quite affordable, though the discerning critic might argue that the price tag is still highly inflated in relation to the quality of workmanship. I like strolling through the fair not so much to check out watercolors and terra cotta dinnerware but to people watch and get caught up in the fun spirit of the eager crowd. The tacky food stalls with their fattening and sugary treats are also a big plus.
