The free-wheeling, liberal atmosphere of central Amsterdam can be confusing and enjoyable all at once. The liberal laws regarding "soft drugs" and prostitution are a working experiment in a progressive government: coffee shops serve loose joints and you can buy designer drugs of all descriptions in the head shops. Just don't try to leave the country with any of it. What happens in Amsterdam stays in Amsterdam. This is also the most popular gay destination on earth.
