Urimbirra Wildlife Park

Urimbirra is a relatively small animal park with a great heart. In addition to allowing up-close and personal interactions with Australia's unique animals, the park also cares for animals in need. This family-run gem gives animals plenty of room to roam and clearly treats it's animals well. Species covered a wide range of Australian natives: koalas, wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, reptiles, and more. When I was there, there was a 9-week-old litter of dingo puppies who came right up to the fence and only wanted to lick my nose. Surprisingly, the first animals you'll encounter are free-range guinea pigs. A few guinea pigs were bought years ago to breed for reptile food. Breeding was more successful than expected, resulting in a major surplus. Now there are many guinea pigs wandering the grounds and children are invited to a special annual event where they can choose a pet for themselves. The gift shop is one of the best I found anywhere in Australia. An evening visit (arranged through Banksia Adventures) allows you to see the animals when they are most active. The park is just outside of the town of Victor Harbor and is well signed. There is also a small restaurant near the entrance.
