Description: Storybook Island was one of my favorite places to visit while I was growing up, and it still holds a special place in my heart. This free children’s park is full of our favorite storybook and cartoon characters -- Winnie the Pooh, the Flintstones, Black Beauty, Barney, Cinderella, and countless others. There are lots of swings, slides, and things to climb on. There is a free children’s theatre that stages shows all summer long.
Ruud and I went on a hot, hot day, so we shuffled through it pretty quickly. I had memories of it being this huge place, but actually it's not so big. We did it in an hour, but if you have kids you can count on it taking a lot longer -- you could probably spend a whole afternoon here if you wanted.
There is a special section for children under five years old with smaller playground equipment where the little ones don't have to worry about getting run over by the big kids.
There's a little train that zips around the park for the kids to ride, and there are concession stands with reasonably priced goodies for sale. The gift shop isn't very good, but check it out -- you never know.
They have added lots of new exhibits since I have last been there, such as Jack and the Beanstalk and the Cat in the Hat. We still saw many of my old favorites, though, like The Wizard of Oz and Noah's Ark.
I think Storybook Island is buckets of fun, even when you're not a kid. I guess I just like taking funny pictures with everything. Hey, it's free -- what have you got to lose? Try it out.
