Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon

What a wonderful experience! This was my first half-marathon, and now I'm hooked. I don't think you can go more than a mile without some form of entertainment. The various neighborhoods had spirit contests, and I enjoyed seeing how they outfitted their houses and themselves. My favorite was a Hawaiian-themed community that played music and sprayed runners with water as they ran by. Cheerleaders from local schools also competed to see who had the most spirit. It's great to have "professionals" encouraging you to keep on running. Finally, there were the bands. I heard every kind of music there is during that run. There were times I wanted to just stop running and party! The route goes through Camp Pendleton (a Marine Corps base), various neighborhoods, and ends by running down the boardwalk in the hotel district. Running on all that concrete after going 10 or 11 miles did not feel great but I was too close to the finish to let it stop me. All in all, it was a wonderfully enjoyable race, especially when you get a finisher's medal placed around your neck as soon as you cross the finish line! I'm hooked and will return next year!
