The Best Tourist Attraction in Chicago

The Best Tourist Attraction in Chicago

Every time we have guests, we schedule a boat tour of Chicago through the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF). There's nothing better on a lovely summer day. It isn't inexpensive - about $30/pp, but well worth it. The docents are very well informed, having had hundreds of hours of training, and they give a 1 1/2 hour spiel, describing the buildings, the architects, and interesting stories about the city. Chicago is famous for its architecture, with buildings in the Beaux Artes style, Miesian (Mies van der Rohe), modern, post-modern, neo-Classical, Art Deco, and more. The features of the various styles will be pointed out to you and there will be more information than you can take in. I've taken the tour numerous times and learn something new (or again) every time. The Chicago River is famous for being green (and on St. Patrick's Day this is emphasized by adding green coloring to it!) and you will meander along seeing the buildings by some of the worlds' best and most famous architects. And you will hear the story of how the river was turned around - now flowing AWAY from the lake so as to help keep the lake cleaner.

It's best to visit the CAF site and reserve your seats for the tour. I know that this is taking a chance with the weather, but if you want a special time/day, you should do this. Then when you are in the city, the tour meets at the Michigan Avenue Bridge and Wacker Drive, obviously down below the street level by the river. You can pick up your tickets there.

The CAF also offers lots of walking and bus tours of the city. If you have an interest in any particular architectural era or any particular part of the city, you should go to the CAF site and check out their many offerings.

Architecture River Boat Cruise - Perfect Way to See Chicago

Architecture River Boat Cruise - Perfect Way to See Chicago

As a major metropolis, Chicago hands-down has better architecture than New York. There are some really striking buildings (from the predictably ostentatious Trump building being built right now to long-standing art deco buildings) and the water-ways running through Chicago provide the perfect vantage point to take them all in.

According to our hotel concierge, the Chicago Architecture Foundation Cruise is the best to go on since they have some of the most knowledgeable guides. Ours certainly was. She rattled off facts and dates and architecture styles for close to two ours throughout the duration of our cruise. Very impressive.

Note: even in July in the middle of the day it can be a bit brisk on the boat in the shade - or at least it was during our trip. If you're just precisely comfortable standing stock still in the sun when you're there, best to bring a sweatshirt or something on the boat with you, just in case.

Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise

This is the official tour on the boat called Chicago's First Lady, which departs from the Riverside Gardens two full flights of steep stairs below Michigan Avenue. Telephone for information on accessibility for disabled people. This boat is comfortable, with both inside and outside deck seating. On bright days, be sure use your sunscreen. There is a volunteer docent on board who will give you a fast lecture during the 90-minute tour. There is also a bar that sells cold drinks, coffee, alcoholic drinks, and snacks.

This tour starts by heading away from the lake and visits both branches of the Chicago River. The buildings are so amazing that even with the docent and the provided map in hand, it will seem to go by too quickly. There are more bridges than Paris, or so they say, and more high-priced real estate than you can imagine.

Likely a bit of a bore for children younger than 12, it is a fascinating tour for those who are older than that. The boat goes out on the lake very briefly, but doesn't enter the locks. The commercial tours from the Navy Pier spend a lot of time dealing with the lock, but likely are easier for disabled folks to board from the pier.

Chicago is such a classy city that you might find yourself feeling very "small town" when you go home.
