As we finish checking in it turns out we just missed the trip (tour) to the desert (to catch the sunset). They have different options, you can either just go for the sunset or spend the night. The hotel makes all the arrangements for you all you need to do is show up on time. The prices range from $20 for the day trip to $85 to $130 to spend the night. Since we missed the night trip we had to wait until the morning for the next trip out.
Wake up time was 3am--everyone was waiting in the lobby for their "tour guide" vehicles. From what I can remember I was the only American there and my travel mates where French. Communication with the tour guide was via-sign language, lol--regardless they just instructed us to be sure to have a scarf for the high desert winds and sunglasses. I just thought it was cool to wear but it did serve a purpose. By 3:30am we where on our way to the edge of the desert. Ever thought the desert it self surrounded the city the REAL desert was an hour away. We hop on supped-up Range Rovers to deal with the rough terrain in the Sahara desert. The actual ride was amazing; basically the driver is driving as fast as he can into the desert in pitch-black darkness scary but fun. Once we reached the edge dunes of the Sahara, camels and "blue man" waited for us at an old ‘active’ outpost owned by the hotel. We had a quick tea and bread for breakfast. Then it was time to join our caravan for our trek to the dunes. The camel ride was a bit uncomfortable, it was another 20-30mins before we reach one of the highest dunes not to far from the post where we sat and waited for the sunrise.
A totally magical experience, I felt as if I just discovered a new place a new planet! I have never seen anything like this before. As the sun began to rise the sand started to change color from a pale red to brilliant seductive rusty-red, Unbelievable! We spent a good hour just relaxing, and taking loads of pictures. Soon enough it was time to return to our luxurious hotel and relax by the pool. When in Morocco visit Erfoud, it’s an extraordinary experience.
