AMAZING is not adequate but starts to give an impression of what you come away feeling like. I was not prepared for the scale or the size of the historic sites in Luxor. When you hear about the ancient city of Thebis you imagine scenes of ancient Egypt but nothing can prepare you for the experience of actually visiting the sites for yourself. You could get lost around the Temple of Karnak alone.
A short trip across the Nile brings you to the West Bank and the site of Valley of The Kings. A trip into the tombs of ancient Egyptian Kings allows viewing of ancient tomb paintings and hyrogliphics.
All of these sites are a good few hours bus ride from Hurghada and the trip is a worthwhile experience in itself. Usually organized to run in a protective escorted convoy, you drive first through mountains climbing up and away from the Red Sea's coastline before travelling through the desolate plains of the Sahara, stopping midway for refreshment in a small roadside village.
Finally after a few hours you come across the Nile Valley and descend into lush agricultural land before entering into Luxor itself.
