Your SummerFest experience greatly depends upon the group of people who go with you and what you enjoy. I have found that a large group is not much fun, as no one seems to agree, and you end up doing next to nothing. Perhaps my few experiences like this have turned me off SummerFest, but there are many people who just love it.
It is very crowded on the weekends and evenings, so I would recommend bringing kids during the day if you plan to have them with you. The main attractions would be the music shows, most of which cost nothing extra beyond the park entrance fee, amusement park rides, and the food. During the day, they also have other entertainment for the kids, but we have never checked it out.
There are a variety of ways to get discounted tickets for admission. Still, this can be quite an expensive day event, especially if you decide to purchase tickets for the main evening concert. Schedules, admission, specials, etc., are all posted on www.summerfest.com.

For $12 (the 2004 entrance fee), you get all-day access to all-day live music on 11 stages. There are huge acts like Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, and Brittany Spears and local acts with big followings, like the ever-present Pat McCurdy (a must-see Milwaukeean)
There are plenty of food options, from Middle Eastern food (Aladins) to barbeque and even Cousin's Subs and Wendy's (and many more I can't possible remember). There are also family activities, like a children's stage with magicians.
Summerfest is a great family activity, but unfortunately, too many people bring their children to Summerfest at night, when it gets rowdy. The crowd during the day usually consists of families, and the entertainment steered towards families is plentiful. At night, it's extremely packed with college and high school kids, singles, and anyone who loves to rock, drink Leinenkugel's beer, and party.
As a Milwaukeean, I can tell you that we all look forward to Summerfest every year and love to have people visit our city, just to see how much fun it really is.
