Caribbean Life is an effort to help create jobs in the small town of Tortuguero while educating visitors about the Caribbean and its people. There are several parts to the tour. The first part is an informational video produced by the Costa Rica Chamber of Tourism (ICT) that gives a general overview of the areas of the country. This is followed by a little skit explaining the influence of several langugages on the Caribbean dialect. Next is a children's "glow in the dark" puppet show of a traditional tale. Then guests are invited into the kitched to learn how to cook traditional Caribbean foods, such as patacones (fried plantain), agua sapo (a gingered lemonade), and a type of fried bread. You can even try your hand at grinding coffee the old-fashioned way. The last part of the tour includes a short dance show featuring Caribbean music, and the audience is encouraged to dance, too (be forewarned!). This is not your typical, glossy, tourist center. It is small and just getting going, and perhaps more realistic than seeing a "show." Sometimes cheesy, other times a lot of fun, if you want to know about life in the Caribbean, then the Caribbean Life tour is for you.
