While the falls are only going during the spring melt and after heavy rainfall, this hike is definitely worth the drive. After a few steps, you're at a marker that shows Missouri's highest point, which is not that interesting. However, as you follow the trail toward the falls, you will find open glades that are covered by prairie grasses and dwarf trees. The openings allow expansive vistas of the rolling Ozarks without a sign of any development!
The falls were a disappointment, as it had rained nonstop the previous day, but it was still only a trickle, nothing like the state park picture. If you have some extra time (which we didn't) you can hike for another couple miles down the trail to a narrow sheer wall canyon. If it weren't for all the trees you would think you were in the canyon lands of the west. Now back to what I did, the walk along the stream back to the parking lot was cool and gradual, making it easy for the kids.
