Little River Canyon National Preserve

In 1992, the Federal Government made Little River Canyon a national preserve. Running from Lookout Mountain to Weiss Lake, the Little River has carved into the countryside a series of canyons and gorges that are the largest of its type in the eastern United States.

As you drive down the canyon's path, you will be treated to beautiful views of the other side of the canyon and gorgeous waterfalls. There are also plenty of places to stop for picnic lunches, trails for hiking and playgrounds for the kids. As a National Preserve, the canyon has become home to many endangered species that you won't find anywhere else.

I recommend a trip to this attraction for anyone traveling through this area. The total drive takes only about an hour, plus any time that you spend stopped at the rest areas. This makes a nice diversion for families with plenty of places to stop for the kids and for couples looking for romantic places in the countryside.

Little River Canyon, a 27 mile gorge within Desoto State Park, is not only the deepest gorge east of the Mississippi, but one of the country's newest national parks. The river that flows through the gorge is the only river in America that originates and flows on top of a mountain. Multiple scenic overlooks and unusual rock formations can be viewed from the comfort of your car.
