Welcome to the Lighthouse California

The California Lighthouse is on the Northwest point on Arashi Beach. It was built in 1914-1916 after a ship named California wreck at this point. It is abotu 100 feet tall, and 25 feet in diameter.

While the lighthouse is a great photo op, the views of the island are great here. You can see the Northern and Eastern Coasts meet here, which we enjoyed simply standing seeing both at the same time, with island in the middle. There is a restaurant nearby (pretty much attached to the parking lot) that is highly recommended called Trattoria El Faro Blanco. It has a plaque with the history of the lighthouse, which I enjoyed reading. A man named Luigi gave us a flyer that included a 10% off coupon while we were there.

There are lots of rocks popping out of the ground, some of which were coral. There are arranged rocks surrounding pillars, that are apparently there to represent sea serpents. There were lizards running around these small boulders, try to avoid people. I would have a cute picture of one, but my husband found it to be more fun to slowly chase one than to allow me to get a picture.

I don’t know that you need to come to the lighthouse multiple times, but extremely recommend that you come see it at least once. It is beautiful, and the views are great. If you come here every year, I would guess that it would be the Trattoria El Faro Blanco that would draw you.

California Sand Dunes and Lighthouse

As you travel north from Oranjestad (the capital of Aruba), you will quickly reach the tip of the island. You will not miss the California Lighthouse because it sticks out like a sore thumb in the desert-like terrain upon a hill.

Before you reach the lighthouse, you will pass the California Sand Dunes on your left. Pull over and take a walk through the dunes; the sand is soft and cool and you can find some interesting rock formations.

As you head up to the California Lighthouse, look out to sea, because you can see just how small the island really is. From the base of the lighthouse, you can see down the south coast and the north coast of the island.

Stop at the restaurant located at the lighthouse; it is an open-air restaurant and is absolutely beautiful. We sat at the bar overlooking the Tierra Del Sol golf course and had a mango daiquiri (I recommend this drink). You can also see the capital city of Oranjestad from this point.

We did not go into the lighthouse because it seemed as though it was off limits to visitors, but it does provide a great picture opportunity.

There is no admission to the dunes or lighthouse area.
