Columbus Museum of Art

Columbus Museum of Art is the second-largest art museum in Georgia and one of the largest in the Southeast. The museum is known for its collection of American art as well as its regional history galleries. It was the perfect place for me to pull together what I had learned about Columbus.

There are period rooms with furniture and complimentary art. A room with old army tents explained what it was like setting up and living at Fort Benning in the early days. With the river playing such a big part of Columbus’s history, there was a display of past, present, and contemporary water transports.

I particularly enjoyed the exhibit of blown glass by Dale Chihuly. Various shapes and colors of glass had been strategically placed in a wooden boat, which was placed on a black stage. By reflecting spotlights onto the glass, the piece came to life. It was like a kaleidoscope for both eyes.

The curators have done a fabulous job telling Columbus’s history through the art collection.
