Honky Tonk madness

A visit to Broadway is necessary to appreciate the effect that country music has had on this town. Just a short walk from the Ryman and the Hall of Fame (really it is right in the middle of them ), Broadway is a tourist attraction on its own.

Walk along the sidewalk and you hear music coming from each of the bar/restaurant establishments. The volume is loud enough to blast apart a few eardrums. We were hoping to eat at a restaurant on Broadway, but the volume of the music made us rethink our priorities (we value our hearing too much). We even walked down to the Hard Rock - not one of my favorites - but it was closed for a private party. Even the gift shops had music in them, but sometimes it was hard to hear over the din coming from the bar next door. If you plan to spend some time in any of the bars, bring some ear plugs along.

This is heaven for country music fans. My own delight is bluegrass, so my visit to the Gibson workshops was brilliant. But the highlight of my week was to stand by J R Cash's gravestone and be able to video the sight to bring home with me. Back on Honkeytonk Row, a lover of the music cannot fail to be moved by the songs coming through the doors or the beer being served inside! This will be a memory I treasure until the next time.

Honkey Tonk Row on Broadway

While you'll find mostly country bands here, there are MANY bars to wander in and out of . . . ALL with live entertainment from 11am to 3am every day of the week. Tootsie's is a well-known venue, but we preferred the more country-rock bands at the Stage on Broadway. We watched a band called "The Chameleons" play a 3+ hour set on Saturday night. The place was rockin'!

During the day, it's easy to get a seat and a drink. At night, especially the weekends, it can get very crowded. Instead of a regular paycheck for their gigs, the bands earn their money by passing around a tip jar.

The bars are great places to watch the cowboys and cowgirls in their short skirts, hats, and boots!
