Whether you're zipping through the Grote Markt on a Segway Tour, or just wandering through Flanders Fields, you'll find no shortage of low-cost (and sometimes free!) things to do in Bruges.
With so much to see in and around the city, it's no surprise that a number of excellent tour companies have sprung up in Bruges. Quasimodo Tours is one of the most popular options, specializing in tours to the historic battlefields of Flanders Fields, day trips to the Chateaus and Castles of Flanders. Those looking for a shorter option should check out the Boat Tours of Bruges, which explores the historic city and its medieval landmarks from its network of canals. And for those who want all the experience of a guided tour without leaving their theater seats, the comedic one-man show, The English Theater of Bruges, mixes comedy, slides and video in a multi-media tour of all the city has to offer.
Bruges' grand medieval architecture is on full display in the Grote Markt, where the iconic 13th century Belfry rises 270 feet above the surrounding street. Dwarfing the Belfry at 367 feet, however, is the grand tower of Church of Our Lady, the tallest structure in the city, and the second tallest brickwork tower in the world. The 12th-century Basilica of the Holy Blood and Burg Square is a humbler structure, but no less fascinating for its incredible history. While the architectural art of the city is in full display on the streets, the vivid history of Belgian art is in permanent residence at the Groeninge Museum, where visitors can enjoy six centuries of Flemish and Belgian paintings.
And of course, no trip to Bruges is complete without plenty of chocolate. Sample the goods at The Chocolate Line, where inventive and exotic pairings sit amidst classic goodies on the extensive menu. And you'll find no better place to relax after a long day than with one of the brews at De Halve Maan (The Half Moon) Brewery. Kick back and enjoy a pint or two (or three), nosh on some food, or take the low-cost tour of the brewery.
